My young journey as a photographer has taken me through a number of different genre interests, from landscapes to wildlife to cemeteries to churches to street to portraiture and everything in between. While I love all aspects of photography, I have come to discover two real loves. The first is Street Photography.
As my love of photography, I have a love of many genres of music and as I age, the love expands. So what better way to fuse my 2 passions together than to explore the genre of Concert Photography? I can't think of one. And so the flame was lit.
I have had the fortune to shoot a few small shows here and there over the past few years, but getting into some bigger shows (like theatres, as opposed to bars) requires Photo Credentials from the Promoters. But hang on, how does one go about this? And what do you need to improve your chances of getting these credentials? First off, you need a good portfolio. If you can't show your work, how is a Promoter to trust you at least have some basic photographic skills? Next, is you need to have an outlet for your photos. Where will your photos get published? Who will see them? Why should a Promoter or Band allow you to shoot one of their shows if it is not going to get their name out there? And therein lies the challenges I have continually encountered.
During my searches, I have discovered there are very little (to none) music publications within the Durham Region. So who do I partner with to share what is happening in our neck of the woods, when it comes to music entertainment, bands, venues and promoters? If you have made it this far, you are reading the answer to my conundrum.
I have never done a blog, and do not profess to fully know what I am doing, but I know that the Covid Pandemic has caused some major blows to the live music industry. My goal here is to help bring some greater awareness to an artform we all love, in order to support our musicians, venues and the oft mentioned promoters who front the money to bring us these acts. And of course, to also open up some doors to another artform that I truly cherish.... Photography!
