What do you get when you combine blood spitting, fire breathing, bat wing wearing Gene Simmons from Kiss, bat biting, dove chewing, werewolf costume wearing, Ozzy Osbourne and Malorie loving, bumbling nerd Skippy from Family Ties? One of the best cult horror/comedy movies from the 80s.
Eddie “Ragman” Weinbauer (Marc “Skippy” Price) is an 80s stereotypical metalhead who is rejected by his fellow high school peers for being that weird kid who doesn’t fit in. Bullied by the jocks and shunned by the rest of the school, Eddie takes solace in hiding in his room and listening to his heavy metal Rock God Sammi Curr who just happens to be an alumnus at Lakeridge High, the same school that Eddie attends.
Sammi’s rude, crude and totally inappropriate behaviour has him banned from playing at the high school Halloween Ball. Before anything else can be done to fight the ban, Eddie learns of Curr’s death in a mysterious hotel fire. From here, the movie throws every heavy metal cliche into the witch’s cauldron to come up with the cult classic!
From rebel late night DJ Nuke (played by Gene Simmons) to backward messages, Trick or Treat brings out the best of 80s metal culture in what quickly becomes a “be careful what you wish for” message for the youth.
After playing a very special version of Curr’s last and unreleased album Songs in the Key of Death backwards, Eddie hears a message specifically for him. Soon, with the help of Curr’s ghost, Eddie starts getting revenge on those that did him wrong at school. But, because this is a horror movie, things quickly get out of control when Eddire realizes that Curr’s ghost wants to play more than just silly pranks and starts seeking out death by heavy metal.
Cue the teenage love interest who becomes the next target and the unreliable friend who unwittingly summons back Sammi for his encore and you have the perfect Halloween movie with a killer soundtrack to curl up with for a frightfully good night!
As for where Ozzy fits into the mix, well, as the kids say, "no spoilers... you’ll have to watch it to find out!"
Stay Spooky!
