By: Michael Drukarsh - Born in 1993, out of the long cold dark winters of Helsinki, Finland, Apocalytica brings forth the power of Metallica in a beautifully arranged symphonic sound that is like nothing else you’ve ever heard.
Their debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos was released in 1996, and from there the band, led by founding member Eicca Toppinen sored to heights no one expected a cello ensemble to reach.
30 years on, Toppinen and fellow cellists, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lotjonen bring their hauntingly heavy renditions of Metallica as well as other hits to cities across the US And Canada, including a stop here in Toronto on February 13th at the Queen Elizabeth Theater. Sure to be featured are songs from their latest release, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol 2 where the band reaches deep into Metallica’s vault to pull out classics like “The Four Horsemen” featuring Metallica bassist, Rob Trujillio, “Blackened” featuring Dave Lombardo, and two versions of “One”, an instrumental once again featuring Trujillio and a second with vocals provided by the master himself, James Hetfield.
Cellos are not often on the radar for heavy metal fans, but Apocalyptica have proven that with the right arrangement, the cello can bring forth the power, the heaviness, and the emotion just as well, if not better than the mightiest flying v.
